The Korea Communications Commission (KCC, Chairman Kim Hong-il) had a meeting with representatives of four domestic OTT companies (Tving, Wavve, Coupang Play, and Watcha) and listened to their opinions on measures to facilitate the domestic OTT industry at Government Complex Gwacheon on Tuesday, May 28. Chairman Kim said during the greeting, "The growth of domestic OTT services is significantly contributing to Korea's content competitiveness." He added, "I appreciate that domestic players that are relatively smaller than global players have continuously invested in quality and quantity content production despite difficult management." The meeting participants said, "We will steadily increase the investment, even though the market environment is not favorable," adding, "We request support the industry through proactive measures to support and protect the domestic industry, helping us to overcome financial struggles and counter the dominance of global OTT players." In addition, the business operators proposed that "the KCC should reflect the principle of minimal regulation and maximal promotion when it pushes improvement of the regulation system for the overall media industry. It also should implement more proactive support, including overseas expansion of domestic OTT business operators." In response to this, Chairman Kim emphasized, "The OTT industry is the foundation for creative and competitive content production as well as for the main distribution platform for Korean content to enter into the global market." He added, "To leap forward to a global media powerhouse in the digital era, the KCC will strive to facilitate the OTT industry with policy-level support, including support for domestic OTT players to secure the global network and advance into overseas markets. We will also draft the comprehensive media legislation in a reasonable manner after collecting enough opinions from business operators under the principle of minimal regulation. He also encouraged business operators to "endeavor to prevent inconvenience of the citizens, including in communications fee plan reform." The KCC plans to continuously collect industrial opinions to reflect them on policies to advance the domestic OTT industry. ### The Korea Communications Commission |
