Title Establishing a 2009 information communication research & developing plan

Korea Communications Commission announced that they have established a ’2009 information communication research & developing plan’ together with the Ministry of Economic Knowledge, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, sponsored by Information communication promotion fund, which will promote the key project starting in January 2009.

* In accordance with a collaboration agreement among the 4 ministries and offices which are related in IT (Economy strategy adjusting meeting, June 2008), an individual and/or common project of the offices in the Information communication promotion fund have been newly established in order to promote an integrated R&D project.

The project budget for the Information communication promotion fund in 2009 is 829.5 billion KW, divided into technology development (653.5 billion), standardization (26.9 billion), man power training (88.6 billion), and research and study (60.5 billion). The budget from the Korea Communications Commission is 280.9 billion for this project, out of 829.5 billion. Even though the total budget of the Korea Communications Commission has been reduced (10.6% reduced from last year) as the fund resource has decreased, the IPTV activating budget has increased (11.8% increased from last year).

The budget for developing the broadcasting technology is 227.6 billion Korean Won. The Korea Communications Commission will exclusively invest 53.5 billion for developing an electric wave broadcasting satellite technology, while the Korea Communications Commission and the Ministry of Economic Knowledge will promote together the development of the mobile communication, BcN, digital TV/broadcasting, information security, etc., jointly investing 174.1 billion.

The main challenges are "developing the next generation IPTV technology available on any wireless environment", "developing a terra hertz electric wave resource, a pioneering technology", "researching the head of the 4th generation mobile communication and the further resources and technology required", "developing the future internet core technology to overcome the current limitations on the internet and to enhance the security and extension of the internet", etc.
